Google Photos Original quality vs Storage saver: what changes?

Choose backup quality around your future editing and printing needs, then verify individual files rather than relying on the setting alone.

The quick answer

Original quality preserves the capture’s resolution and quality according to Google. Storage saver compresses eligible files and resizes photos above 16 MP to 16 MP; videos above 1080p are reduced to 1080p. Choose Original quality when retaining the captured file’s detail matters, and keep a separate original before converting existing backups.

Choose around the version you may need later

An image that looks fine in a small phone preview may still be useful later as a tighter crop, a larger print, or the starting point for a new edit. Decide whether Google Photos will hold your only copy or one of several copies before choosing a storage-saving setting.

For example, a traveler might keep full-resolution originals on separate storage and use a smaller cloud library for everyday browsing. Someone whose cloud library is the only surviving source has a different tradeoff. Neither decision should be based only on how a thumbnail looks today.

This guide addresses Google Photos backup quality. It does not describe a setting in Meluvya, and it does not establish which formats Meluvya accepts.

What Google says each option does

Option or caseResultWatch for
Original qualitySame resolution and quality as captureUses Google Account storage.
Storage saverCompression; eligible photos above 16 MP resized to 16 MPNew backups generally count toward storage too.
Files ineligible for compressionMay remain at original file sizeInspect the item’s backup details rather than assuming failure.

Check the account and the individual photo

Use Google Photos on the web to confirm the active account and backup-quality setting. Then open an actual photo, select Info, and inspect its backup details. The current preference alone does not tell you the quality of every previously uploaded item.

Google’s Android help also documents a per-item check through the photo’s More menu, About and Details. Interfaces differ between platforms and versions, so use the relevant Google help page if your labels differ.

Before a large change, choose a few recognizable samples: one recent portrait, one older image and one especially high-resolution capture. Record their dates and dimensions so you can identify them again. Confirm they are backed up rather than only visible locally in the app.

Future uploads and existing backups are different decisions

Google documents a separate storage-recovery action that converts existing backed-up items to Storage saver. That action does not change the quality selected for future uploads. Do not confuse checking a setting with intentionally converting a library.

Before using recovery, preserve the originals you would miss and verify that those copies open. If compression or resizing discards information, choosing Original quality afterward cannot manufacture that information from the reduced copy.

A useful decision note is: “I kept the original vacation files in this separate location, opened these sample images, and chose the cloud quality for this reason.” This is more reliable than remembering that a backup toggle was once enabled.

Inspect a downloaded sample before deleting anything

Backup quality is also separate from the meaning of Delete or Free up space. Do not use a deletion command as an improvised quality test. Consult Google’s instructions for the exact device and action before removing anything.

  1. Keep the source available. Retain the local original while checking. Do not begin the experiment by removing your only full-resolution copy.
  2. Identify the cloud item. Check its account, date and backup details so you are comparing the intended picture.
  3. Compare a saved copy. Inspect dimensions and important portrait detail in the downloaded file, at the same viewing scale as the source.
  4. Decide what you need to preserve. If later cropping, printing or editing matters, keep the version that supports those uses. A successful small-preview comparison is not proof that the files are identical.

Common questions

Is Storage saver still unlimited free storage?

Do not assume that. Google says Storage saver backups count toward storage, with an exception for qualifying older High quality backups made before June 1, 2021.

Why is one Storage saver file still large?

Google documents exceptions where a file cannot be compressed. Check the item’s details for its actual backup quality and eligibility rather than relying only on size.
